Betsey
BROWN (1831-1901)
Elizabeth BROWN was baptized at Eye in Suffolk in
1831. However from her marriage in 1850 to her death in 1901
she was known, both formally and informally, as Betsey or
Betsy. Her father James Brown was baptised at Eye in
1806 and in 1825 he married Martha Markel
who was born at Oakley. James was a brick maker and they had
the following eight children:
Sarah was baptised at Eye on 18 October 1826 and was buried on
10 January 1827.
|
Catherine was baptised at Eye on 19 April 1829.
|
Elizabeth was their third daughter and she married Charles
Harold in 1850 and from then onwards was known as Betsey or
Betsy.
|
Sarah was baptized at Eye on 21 July 1833.
|
Charles was born in Occold and was aged 35 in the 1871 Census
when he was living with his sister Betsey in Mellis Road,
Thrandeston. In the 1881 Census, aged 45, he was back living
with his parents in Thrandeston and working as an agricultural
labourer.
|
Ann
was baptised at Eye in 1845 and was buried there on 7 September
1846
|
Mary
was also baptised at Eye on 11 September 1845.
|
William was baptised at Eye on 21 June 1847. In the 1881
Census he was an unmarried agricultural labourer, aged 34, and living
with his parents in Thrandeston - who by this time were aged 77
and 74.
|
Betsey Brown
married Charles HAROLD in 1850 at St Margaret's Church, Thrandeston - the witnesses were John Harold (Charles's Uncle)
and Eliza Aldon (relationship still unknown). Of their twelve
children only four survived into adulthood:
David HARROLD Although
baptised as David in 1851 at St Margaret's Church
he was registered in Thrandiston
in the name of Edward HURRELL - the son of Charles HURRELL and
Betsy HURRELL (formerly Browne). David went to live in
Chesterfield, married in Hasland in Derbyshire in 1880 and died
in 1946 in Chesterfield.
|
Edgar HARROLD was born
in 1852 the son of Charles and Betsy HARROLD (formerly
Browne) in Thrandiston.
Edgar moved to Chesterfield, was married twice and died in
Hasland in 1915.
|
Jacob HARROLD was
born in 1854 in Thrandiston. He is shown on his birth certificate as the son of
Charles HARROLD and Betsy HARROLD (formerly Browne). Jacob also moved to Chesterfield.
Sadly his wife died in 1890 when she was only 30. Jacob died
in Chesterfield in 1934 aged 80.
|
Rosa HARROLD was born in
1871 in Thrandiston the daughter of Charles and Betsy HARROLD
(formerly Brown). She was baptised at St
Margaret's Church in Thrandeston. Rosa married Edward Abbott
at St Margaret's Church Thrandeston in 1891 and they had
two children. Rosa died in 1971 aged 99 and was
buried in Thrandeston churchyard.
|
All the
other children were baptised with the name HAROLD and sadly died
when young.
William HAROLD was
baptised in 1850 - interestingly the vicar
crossed out the surname HURRELL and inserted HAROLD. William
was only 19 days old when he died. His death
certificate refers to him as William HARROLD. Betsy HARROLD
registered his death and gave his father's occupation as
'labourer'.
|
Henry HAROLD was
baptised in 1855 and died in 1857.
|
Charles HAROLD was baptised in 1857 and
in 1858 aged 2.
|
Sabina HAROLD was baptised in 1858
and died in 1859 aged
20 months.
|
Charles HARROLD was baptised
in 1859. He died in 1861 and the cause of
his death was diphtheria. Charles was buried in Thrandeston
churchyard.
|
Sabina HAROLD was
baptised in 1862 and died a few days later.
|
Albert HAROLD was baptised in 1863
and died aged 7 months.
|
Arthur HAROLD was baptised
in 1865 and died, aged
15 months, the following year.
|
Betsy
HARROLD died in Thrandeston in 1901
and her daughter Rosa Abbott registered her death. She was
buried in St Margaret's Churchyard on 12 January 1901.
I am indebted to Steve Barber for providing me
with the information on Betsey's family (including detailed
records on all her ancestors) and for checking the accuracy of that data.
