Charles HARROLD (1828-1914)

Charles HURRELL was born in Thrandeston in 1828 and was baptised at St Margaret’s Church – he was the eldest son of Robert HAROLD and Harriet PERRY. The spelling of the family name is still not regularised but Harold and Harrold are always used from 1851 onwards - this page uses the names shown in the original documents.

At St Margaret’s Church, Thrandeston in 1850 Charles HAROLD (aged 21) married Betsey BROWN aged 19, a spinster born at Eye, Suffolk in 1831.   Throughout her marriage Betsy’s name is written either Betsy or Betsey. Her father was James Brown a brick maker and Charles HAROLD’s occupation is shown as ‘labourer’ - throughout his life Charles worked as either a labourer, farm labourer or an agricultural labourer. The witnesses were John Harold (Charles’s Uncle) and Eliza Aldon (relationship still unknown).

Only four of their children survived into adulthood:

David  HARROLD     Although baptised as David in 1851 at St Margaret’s Church he was registered in Thrandiston in the name of Edward HURRELL – the son of Charles HURRELL and Betsy HURRELL (formerly Browne).    David went to live in Chesterfield, married in Hasland in Derbyshire in 1880 and died in 1926 in Chesterfield.

Jacob  HARROLD was born in 1854 in Thrandiston and is shown on his birth certificate as the son of Charles HARROLD and Betsy HARROLD (formerly Browne).    Jacob also moved to Chesterfield.   Sadly his wife died in 1890 when she was only 30.  Jacob died in Chesterfield in 1934 aged 80.

Rosa HARROLD was born in 1871 in Thrandiston the daughter of Charles and Betsy HARROLD (formerly Brown).    She was baptised at St Margaret’s Church in Thrandeston.   Rosa married Edward Abbott at St Margaret’s Church Thrandeston in 1891 and they had two children.   Rosa died in March 1971, aged 99, and was buried in Thrandeston churchyard.

All the other children were baptised with the name HAROLD and sadly died when young – see National Burial Index CD for Thrandeston:

William HAROLD was baptised in 1850 - interestingly the vicar crossed out the surname HURRELL and inserted HAROLD.   William died aged 19 days and his death certificate refers to him as William HARROLD.     Betsy HARROLD registered his death and gave his father’s occupation as ‘labourer’.

Betsy HARROLD died in Thrandeston in 1901 and her daughter Rosa Abbott registered her death.   She was buried in St Margaret’s Churchyard.

In the 1901 Census Charles HARROLD was still living in Mellis Road, as Head of Household with his daughter Rosa, his son-in-law Edward Abbott and his two grandchildren – Rosa (aged 8) and Herbert (aged 6).

Charles HARROLD died in 1914 in Thrandeston aged 84 – the cause of death was given as ‘gangrene of foot’.    His daughter Rosa Abbott was present at the death and registered his death the same day giving his occupation as ‘farm labourer’.
