David HARROLD (1851-1926)

A boy called David HARROLD was baptised in 1851 at St Margaret’s Church, Thrandeston.   I have checked the General Register Office register of births for 1851 using the four spellings Harrold, Harold, Hurold and Hurrell and there is no child born with a first name David.   However, under Hurrell there is a boy called Edward born in the Hartismere Registration District in the last quarter of 1851.   The birth certificate shows that Edward Hurrell was the son of Charles Hurrell, a labourer.   His Mother, who registered the birth in 1851, was called Betsy Hurrell formerly Browne.   This evidence suggests that Edward Hurrell born 1851 in Thrandiston (note spelling) is the person who is named David at his baptism and who throughout his life referred to himself as David HARROLD.   It is interesting to note that the same Registrar met Betsy HARROLD a year later when she registered the birth of Edgar.    The Registrar now writes their names as Charles Harrold and Betsey Harrold formerly Browne but still writes Thrandeston as ‘Thrandiston’.

In 1880 David HARROLD married Ann REEVE at the Parish Church in Hasland.    He was a bachelor aged 29 and she a spinster aged 28.   Ann was born in 1852 in Winfarthing in Norfolk but at the time of their marriage they both lived in Hasland.    Edgar and Thirza HARROLD were the witnesses to the marriage.   A few months later (according to the 1881 Census) David and Ann lived at 8 St Mary’s Gate in Chesterfield.

They had five children:

Charles Edward HARROLD was born in 1881 at 8 St Mary’s Gate in Chesterfield.   in 1907 he married Emma Kate Ling who was born in 1878 in Thrandeston.    Emma died in 1946 at 59 Highbury Road, Chesterfield aged 67 - their son Victor Charles Ling Harrold registered her death.   Thirteen days later Charles died, aged 64, in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital. At the time Charles lived at 59 Highbury Road in Chesterfield and his occupation is shown as Clerk in an Engineering Works.   His daughter Ethel Holmes was present at the death.

Annie Mary HAROLD was born in 1882 at 8 St Mary’s Gate in Chesterfield.   At the time David was a Miller’s Labourer.  Annie Mary died in 1947 in Colyton, Devon - her occupation is shown as 'spinster of no occupation. Daughter of David Harrold'.   Her niece, from Barlow near Chesterfield, registered her death.

Robert HARROLD was born at South Terrace in Chesterfield in 1884.    In 1909 he married Mary Annie Wilkinson in Chesterfield and in 1911 (when their daughter Grace was born) he lived in Ipswich.    Robert died in 1973 at 57 Crabbe Street, Ipswich - his daughter Grace registered his death.

Grace HARROLD was born in 1888 and died the following year at 3 Victoria Street aged sixteen months.    Grace was buried at Spital Cemetery.

David and Ann also cared for Jacob HARROLD’s daughter Mary Ann HARROLD (born in 1890) following the death of her mother aged 30.  Mary Ann died in 1892 aged 22 months at 3 Victoria Street, Chesterfield and her death was registered by her father Jacob.

The 1901 Census shows that the family lived at 5 Victoria Street in Chesterfield and consisted of David (aged 49 – a warehouseman at a flour mill), Ann (aged 48), Charles (aged 19 – Clerk Commercial), Annie (aged 18) and Robert (aged 16).

In 1919 Ann HARROLD died at 6 Victoria Street, Chesterfield. Her death was registered by David HARROLD and she was buried in Spital Cemetery.    David died at 6 Victoria Street, Newbold Road, Chesterfield in 1926 aged 75 – his son Charles Edward HARROLD registered his death.

I am indebted to Yvonne Harrold for sharing her extensive knowledge of David HARROLD's family.    Yvonne is a direct descendant of David.    She contacted me in 2004 and we are now collaborating in developing our knowledge of the extended Harrold Family.
