David HARROLD (1851-1926)
A boy
called David HARROLD was baptised in 1851 at St
Margaret’s Church, Thrandeston. I have checked the General
Register Office register of births for 1851 using the four
spellings Harrold, Harold, Hurold and Hurrell and there is
no child born with a first name David. However, under Hurrell
there is a boy called Edward born in the Hartismere Registration
District in the last quarter of 1851. The birth certificate
shows that Edward Hurrell was the son of Charles Hurrell,
a labourer. His Mother, who registered the birth
in
1851, was called Betsy Hurrell formerly Browne. This evidence
suggests that Edward Hurrell born 1851 in Thrandiston (note spelling) is the person who is named David
at his baptism and who throughout his life referred to himself
as David HARROLD. It is interesting to note that the same
Registrar met Betsy HARROLD a year later when she registered the birth of Edgar. The Registrar now
writes their names as Charles Harrold and Betsey Harrold formerly
Browne but still writes Thrandeston as ‘Thrandiston’.
In 1880 David HARROLD married Ann REEVE at the Parish
Church in Hasland. He was a bachelor aged 29 and she a spinster
aged 28. Ann was born in 1852 in Winfarthing in
Norfolk but at the time of their marriage they both lived
in Hasland. Edgar and Thirza HARROLD were the
witnesses to the marriage. A few months later (according to
the 1881 Census) David and Ann lived at 8 St Mary’s
Gate in Chesterfield.
They had five children:

her mother aged 30. Mary Ann died in
1892 aged 22 months at 3 Victoria Street, Chesterfield and her
death was registered by her father Jacob.
The 1901
Census shows that the family lived at 5 Victoria Street in
Chesterfield and consisted of David (aged 49 – a warehouseman
at a flour mill), Ann (aged 48), Charles (aged 19 –
Clerk Commercial), Annie (aged 18) and Robert (aged 16).
In 1919 Ann HARROLD died at 6 Victoria Street,
