Jacob HARROLD (1854-1934)
Until
2003 I knew nothing at all about Jacob HARROLD and piecing
together his life has not been an easy task. Jacob was born in 1854 at Thrandeston in Suffolk. His father was Charles HARROLD (a labourer) and his mother Betsy HARROLD (formerly
Browne).
In 1876 Jacob married Mary Ann Calladine at the Parish Church in
Newbold, near Chesterfield. Jacob
and Mary Ann HARROLD had at least six children:

she lived with her father, her husband (Charles Broadhurst)
and their two children (Charles aged 2) and Margaret (aged
7 weeks).

Lucy EARLE was aged 9 in the 1891 Census.
By 1934, when she registered the death of her father, she
had married and lived at 89 King Street, Whittington Moor,
Chesterfield.

Jarvis HARROLD was born in 1887 at Foundry
Street, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield.
In 1907 he married Sarah Ann Barber at Newbold
Parish Church. At this stage I do not know
whether Jarvis and Sarah had any children. Jarvis
died in Chesterfield in 1931 aged 43. At
the time or his death he was a coal miner (roadman).

Mary
Ann HARROLD was born in 1890 and died and died two years
later. |

Tragedy
struck the family in 1890.
On 14 April Jacob’s wife Mary Ann died at the age of
30. On the 26 April
Jacob HARROLD, a coal miner, registered his new baby daughter
and called her Mary Ann HARROLD in memory of her mother. Mary
Ann was brought up by her uncle and aunt, David and Ann HARROLD,
in their home at 3 Victoria Street, Chesterfield, but sadly
she died aged 22 months.
In 1901 Jacob HARROLD was
still living at Foundry Street, Whittington
Moor in Chesterfield. In the Census he was shown as head of
household (aged 49 and a colliery labourer).
Jacob
HARROLD died at 10 Foundry Street, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield
in 1934 aged 80.
