Rosa HARROLD (1871-1971)
Rosa HARROLD
was born in 1871 in Thrandiston the daughter of Charles
HARROLD (an agricultural labourer) and Betsy HARROLD. She
was baptised at St Margaret’s Church
in Thrandeston.
In the
1881 Census she was living with her parents at Mellis Road
in Thrandeston.
Rosa HAROLD
married Edward Abbott at St Margaret’s Church Thrandeston
in 1891. It is interesting to note that Rosa signed
her name Rosa HARROLD and that Charles HAROLD could not write
his name.
By the
time of the 1901 Census her Mother had just died and she was
still living at Mellis Road with both her Father and her husband
Edward Abbott (aged 32) and their two children (Rosa born in
1892 and Herbert born in 1894).
Sadly
her son Herbert, a private in the 1st/5th Battalion of the
Suffolk Regiment, died aged 24 on 22 February 1918. He is
buried in the Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery in
Egypt and his name is on the War Memorial by the gate of St
Margaret’s Church in Thrandeston.
In 1919
her daughter Rosa married George Frederick Boast.
She died in 1979 at Botesdale, Norfolk.
In
March 1971, only months from her 100th birthday, Rosa died in Blythburgh and District Hospital. On the
death certificate it states that she was the 'Widow of Edward
Abbot Platelayer British Rail' and her address is given as
'The Old Post Office Thrandeston Diss'. An
Official from the Hospital registered her death.
The Thrandeston Burial Register states that Rosa Abbott, of
Mellis Road, Thrandeston was buried in March 1971, aged 99.
