THE HARROLDS
My
HARROLD Family Tree starts with John Harrold who was born
around 1760 in East Harling in Norfolk and died in Thrandeston,
Suffolk in 1843. One of the major problems I have had in verifying
my data is the spelling of Harrold, which is often alternatively
written as Harold, Hurrold and Hurrell. The compiler of the
Parish Register for St Margaret’s Church in Thrandeston
usually spells their name Hurrell – possibly reflecting
the way the Harrolds pronounced their name when speaking to
him or his own ability to write and spell. This was also the
case with the Census enumerators – in 1851 an enumerator
wrote Elizabeth Harold for Charles HARROLD’s wife even
though she always referred to herself as Betsy. Sometimes
it is difficult to read the letter ‘a’ and ‘u’
on a microfiche, which affects the spelling of the name Harold
or Harrold. The spelling of their surnames on the following
pages is as it is shown in the Parish Registers and on their
birth, marriage or death certificates.
Four of John HARROLD’s children were baptised in East
Harling and the remaining children in Thrandeston. Robert
HARROLD and his family were all born in Thrandeston and lived
there all their lives. So too did Charles HARROLD and his
family until three of his surviving sons moved to Chesterfield.
At this stage I do not have an exact date when any of them
moved and neither do I have a reason. Edgar HARROLD married
his first wife Thirza Fairweather in Chesterfield Parish Church
in November 1873. Thirza died in 1882 and two years later
Edgar married Jane Fisher who was born in Chesterfield. David
HARROLD married Ann REEVE in Hasland near Chesterfield in
December 1880 and Jacob HARROLD, his wife Margaret Ann and
three of their children were living in Chesterfield at the
time of the 1881 Census.
Mabel
HARROLD was my Grandmother. On the 10th of July 1905 she married
my Grandfather (Walter LONGDEN) at the Mount Zion Chapel in
Chesterfield.
