John HARROLD (1760-1843)
It is
likely that John HARROLD was born in 1760, the son of John
Harrold and Judith Bridges. At present I
do not know exactly when, or even where, he was born. The spelling of John
and his family’s surnames on this page are exactly as
they appear in the Parish Registers in St Peter and St Paul
Church in East Harling in Norfolk, St Thomas and St Mary's
Church in Wortham and St Margaret’s Church
in Thrandeston, Suffolk.
In 1787 John HARROLD married Judith STYLES
at St Margaret’s Church in Thrandeston.
In 1788 a Poor Law Settlement Certificate was sealed and
delivered in East Harling. This Certificate said that the
Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor ‘do own and
acknowledge John Harrold and Judith his wife to be inhabitants
last legally settled in our said Parish of Kenninghall’.
It is not always understood today that a person with few or
no means was prevented from moving into another Poor Law Parish
without the express authority of the Overseers – this
usually meant that their home parish agreed to accept responsibility
if they ever needed financial aid.

John
and Judith had fourteen children – on every entry in
the Parish Register John is referred
to as a shoemaker and Judith as ‘late
Styles’:
Samuel HAROLD was born
and baptised in 1788 in East Harling. Samuel was a shoemaker and he and his
wife Ann had at least eight children. They
lived at Scole in Norfolk and Ann was buried there in 1851 aged 56 and Samuel
in 1861
aged 74.

Catherine HARROLD was born
in 1790 in East Harling and died in 1795.
|
William HAROLD was born
in East Harling in 1791. He
married Esther and they had at least eight children -
all with the surname Hurrell. They lived at
Scole in Norfolk.
|
Thomas HAROLD was born
in 1793 in East Harling and baptised in
1794.break
|
Judith HURRELL was born in Thrandeston in 1796 and baptised at St Margaret's Church.
In 1814 Judith was living in Diss and during her
Examination to gain a Settlement in the Parish she
said 'that [she] was now in ill health and cannot
support herself without Parish Relief'. It is likely,
therefore, that Judith is
the Judith Hurrell, aged 30, who was buried 1828 in Thrandeston.
|
Easter HAROLD was baptised in 1799. She had two children
- Anna (1824-1902) and John (1826-1904). Esther HARROLD died
in
1856 and was buried at Thrandeston.
|
Phillip HAROLD was born in 1880.
There is no evidence of his baptism but he married
Emily and had at least two children.
In the 1871 Census Phillip was a widower and gave his
place of birth as 'Thrandeston, Suffolk'.
Phillip HAROLD died in 1875
in Norwich.
|
John HURRELL was baptised in 1802.
By the time of the 1851 Census John HAROLD was married
to Sarah and lived with his family in Islington.
In the 1881 Census John and Sarah HAROLD were living
in Islington. In
1884 John HAROLD died at 33 Pultney Street,
Islington - his daughter Anne Maria registered his
death. Seven days later Sarah Ann HAROLD died at Pultney Street.
|
Robert
HURRELL was baptised
in 1803. In 1823
he married Charlotte Bond.
Sadly Charlotte died aged 32 in 1824
in Thrandeston. In 1826 he
married Harriet Perry. Harriet died
in 1888 and Robert in 1891 at Stuston in Suffolk.
|
Edward Harold - I cannot find any reference to
Edward's baptism but census and other evidence suggests that he
was born in Thrandeston in 1804. He
married Maria King at St Luke's Church, Old Street,
Finsbury in 1829. Maria Harold
died in 1851.
Edward was a shoemaker and died at Bethnal Green in 1884 aged 80.
|
Jane HURRELL was baptised in 1807.
|
Hannah
HURRELL was baptised in 1809.
Hannah married James Churchard in 1831 at Thrandeston - James was a widower.
In 1849 James died, aged 47, at Wortham.
Hannah was 83 years old when she died in 1892.
|
Henry
HURRELL was baptised in 1812.
|
Harriet HURRELL was baptised in 1817.

John
and Judith moved from East Harling to Thrandeston sometime
between 1795 (when Catherine died) and the birth of Judith
in 1796.
John's
wife Judith
HURRELL, according to the Parish Register at St Margaret’s
Church Thrandeston, was buried in 1828 aged 60.
Two
years later John married Martha Cunnel
at Wortham Parish Church. The 1841 Census for Thrandeston
provides us the confirmation that this was John Harrold - the
entry shows a John Harrold, aged 80, a cordwainer, and his wife Martha
aged 75.
John
died in 1843 and was buried in the churchyard of St
Margaret's Church, Thrandeston. His death certificate shows his name as John HURROLD, gives his date of death as November 1843, the place
of death Thrandeston, his occupation a shoemaker and the
cause of death ‘Old Age’.
At the time of the 1851 Census
Martha Hurrell was
living in Mellis Road Thrandeston - she was aged
87, a pauper and a 'shoemakers widow'.
