Robert HARROLD (1803-1891)
Robert
HURRELL was baptised in 1803 at St Margaret’s
Church in Thrandeston. How his name is spelt on the formal
occasions of his life depends on what the Curates and Registrars
thought they heard and their own writing skills. The spelling
of the surname of Robert HAROLD and his family on this page
is as it is shown in the Parish Registers and other official
documents.
In
1823 Robert HARROLD married Charlotte BOND by Banns. The record
in the Parish Register says they were married in St Margaret’s
Church in Thrandeston with ‘consent of Parents’.
John HARROLD was present and all three signed with his or
her x mark. Sadly Charlotte survived only sixteen months of
marriage and was buried in 1824 in Thrandeston aged
32.
In 1826 at St Margaret’s Church Thrandeston Robert
HURRELL married Harriet PERRY. Robert
and Harriet had at least ten children. Every entry refers
to Robert HURRELL 'a shoemaker' and Harriet 'late Perry'.
Charles
HURRELL was baptised in 1828
In 1850 Charles married Betsey BROWN from Eye. Charles HARROLD died in
Thrandeston in 1914 aged 84.

Ipswich, Queensland.

|
Robert
HURRELL was born in 1837 and was living with his parents at the
time of the 1861 Census. In 1863 a
Robert HAROLD, aged 25, arrived in Queensland, Australia. The records on
the website of the State Library of Queensland show that
'Robert Harrold married Susannah Crane' in
1865 and died in 1907.

Census she was 12 years old. Judith was
still living at
home in 1861 and gave her occupation as 'servant'.
In 1867 Judith HAROLD married Robert Chapman
at the Parish Church in Palgrave, Suffolk.
Robert was a very young widower with a seven year-old
son - he gave his occupation as 'Thatcher'.
Judith's sister Eliza was one of the witnesses.
Their daughter Sabina was born in 1868.
They lived in Thorndon All Saints.

Catherine
HURRELL was born in 1841 in Thrandeston
and baptised in 1843. In 1863 Catherine

William spent most of his life as a 'journeyman
carpenter'. Catherine died in Ipswich
in 1909, aged 69.

Jane
HURRELL was born in 1842. There were only two
baptisms at St Margaret's Church in 1842, hence Jane's
baptism in 1843. In the 1851 Census
she was 8 years old and in 1861 she was a
servant with her sister Eliza at a house in Cock Street, Diss.
Interestingly she was now using the surname Harrold.
In 1867 Jane married George Franks in the Parish
Church in Copdock in Suffolk - her sister Judith Chapman
was one of the witnesses. George Franks
died in 1917 at Elm Cottage, Copdock aged 71.
Jane was still living at Elm Cottage when she died in 1920.

Thomas
HURRELL was baptised in 1845. On the top of this
entry are the words 'NB Priv baptized’ and on the bottom left hand corner
it says ‘Received into Church April 6’. Thomas
was clearly not too well when he was born.
In 1871 Thomas HARROLD, aged 24 and a
'Stone Mason', married Harriett
Smith Boar at the Parish Church at Palgrave in Suffolk.
He lived the rest of his life in Denmark Street, Diss in

and Eliza died in 1916.

as Henry HURRELL in 1850

The above
births are confirmed in the 1851 Census taken at Little Green,
Thrandeston - the Census
shows that they all gave the surname HAROLD and that Harriet
was two years younger than Robert. Also living at Little Green were Harriet’s
parents Jacob and Sarah PERRY (both aged 77) and Charles HAROLD
(cited as ‘grandson aged 22’ and ‘born Thrandeston’)
and Elizabeth (‘granddau aged 20, born in Eye’).
Clearly Elizabeth is Betsy – Charles HAROLD’s
new wife.
In the
1861 Census Robert HAROLD, a shoemaker, lived in Palgrave,
Suffolk. In 1871 Robert was still a shoemaker
living on Church Green, Palgrave.
In the
1881 Census both Harriet and Robert gave their surname as
‘HURRELL’. At the time the two of them lived at The Green, Palgrave in Suffolk. Even though 79 at the time Robert gave
his occupation as ‘Shoe Maker’.
Harriet’s
parents were buried in St Margaret’s churchyard, Thrandeston
– Jacob PERRY in 1861 (aged 87) and Sarah in 1866 (aged 92).
In 1888 Harriet HAROLD died. Her death certificate shows
that she was the ‘wife
of Robert Harold, shoemaker (master)’ and died of ‘old
age’ (she was 84) at Stuston. According to the Parish
Register she was buried in the churchyard of All Saints Church, Stuston.
Robert
HAROLD was living with his daughter Eliza Elsey and her
family in Wortham when he died in 1891 aged 90. On his death certificate
